Cobia and King Mackerel Fishing Guide

Some time around St. Patrick’s Day, a large and highly prized fish starts to show up along the beaches around Panama City, Florida. Cobia, lemon fish, ling, whatever you prefer to call them, is well known and sought after throughout the Gulf of Mexico and along Panama City Beach.

Some of the guys I grew up with here in Panama City, Florida, save a large portion of their vacation time for the cobia run. Peaking the middle of April each year, the migration lasts about six weeks. What makes cobia fishing along Panama City Beach, Florida, and the Gulf Coast so exciting is “hunting” the fish and “sight casting” at them when spotted. Many days they are as easy to catch as flipping a jig at them, while other days, you have to work a little harder with presentation and bait. The size of the fish can range anywhere from 20 to 80 pounds or more. Many fish in the 50-pound class are caught along Panama City Beach each year.

With my customized 24-ft. Carolina Skiff you can have “tower time” looking for and casting to these fish while they migrate along the gulf coast each spring. Of course I supply all of your gear but you are welcome to bring your own if you choose. Cobia trips last 9 hours and can start either at 0600 or 0700. Along with the cobia fishing, we will sight cast to pompano, jacks, sharks and other migrating fish along Panama City Beach.

Following the cobia run and not far behind come the king mackerel. Weather permitting I will take you king fishing just offshore of Panama City Beach from May through September. We fish for kings in several different ways. Slow trolling cigar minnows is the most popular, although my favorite is drifting live bait over the wrecks. Along with kings, other species that are caught during these trips can include bonito, cobia, sailfish, wahoo, snappers and amberjacks. My normal hourly rates apply with a possible live bait charge
