light tackle fishing Panama City, Florida.

Fishing Panama City Beach

Fishing in the Panhandle of Florida in the crystal clear waters surrounding Panama City will be an experience you will not soon forget. Captain James Pic has been fishing the Panama City, Florida area for over 30 years.

Light Tackle Fishing

My favorite technique to catch red snapper and some other fish is to chum them up to the surface.  Fishing with light tackle equipment to float a bait into these 10 to 25lb snapper as they come to the top.  Using small diameter line and light tackle equipment is some times the only way to get these fish to bite.

Fishing with light tackle is something which has very popular over the last 20 to 30 years. Basically it means catching large fish with lighter equipment. Sometimes the only way you can catch some of these bigger fish is with super light tackle and line.  This is because the water is very clear or they’re very smart or both. With JP2Fish.com we tend to use as small as 15lb leader, a medium to medium heavy rod. The advantages of light tackle fishing are being able to tactically get larger fish to bite because the lighter line does not spook them as much.

For the last 10 years or so I have been building my own trolling lures I call mahi killers.  There’s nothing prettier than watching a mahi jump behind the boat hooked on light tackle.  Mahi mahi, in my opinion, are the most exciting fish to catch on light tackle. Weather trolling or pulling up to a weed pile or a piece of debris floating and finding these green and yellow fish are a wonderful experience and great table fare.  Come fish with me and experience the fun of a true light tackle fishing fexperience.
